MP WELCOMES AMAZON RAINFOREST PROTECTION VICTORY

Michael Connarty the MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk has warmly welcomed the announcement from environmental campaign group Greenpeace of a major victory in the fight against Rainforest destruction.

Greenpeace have secured an agreement with four of the largest players in the global cattle industry which means they will stop purchasing any cattle from newly de-forested areas of the Amazonian Rainforest.  Presently large areas of trees are being felled on a daily basis to provide large ranch style grazing fields in this area of such importance .  They will also register and map cattle ranches in the area to ensure their commitment is strictly upheld.  This pledge is significant in the campaign against de-forestation in the “lung of the world” as cattle ranching is the single largest cause of Rainforest destruction in the world today.

Michael said “I welcome this decision by the major cattle traders which should stop some destruction of the Rainforests.  These precious areas are vital to the CO2 balance of our planet and I congratulate and support Greenpeace on this campaign".
