Michael Connarty
Labour Member of UK Parliament - Linlithgow and East Falkirk Constituency
Looking At The Future Of Power Generation.
Linlithgow and East Falkirk MP Michael Connarty recently visited Longannet Power Station in his capacity as a member of the UK Offshore Parliamentary Group.
The Parliamentarians were there to see at first hand the the newly installed prototype Carbon Capture Unit which will extract co2 emissions from coal fired power stations.
Longannet, run by Scottish Power, currently generates 2400 megawats of Electricity daily which is the highest output of any Scottish power station. Longannet is located near Kincardine on the River Forth and has become the first UK power station to have this new green technology and is on track to have full Carbon Capture capacity in line with Government objectives by the year 2014.
Michael was also impressed by the commitment of Scottish Powers parent company Iberdrola to cleaner energy generation with their announcement of a project to set up a Global Centre Of Excellence in the UK and their funding of an Edinburgh University project providing an academic focus on carbon capture technology.
After the visit to Longannet Michael Connarty said “ Climate Change caused by co2 emissions is the one thing that can be eradicated with carbon capture technology such as we saw working at Longannet today. The Government have set an ambitious but achievable target on co2 emission reduction measures which is now a big step closer thanks to this unique carbon capture unit installed here at Longannet Power Station.”
