Local Labour MP Michael Connarty Give Support for White Ribbon Campaign’s Work to Reduce Domestic Violence
Michael Connarty MP joined Ed Miliband and Harriett Harman, the Leaderand Depute Leaders of the Labour Party in the Palace of Westminster to show support for the White Ribbon Campaign. The White Ribbon Campaign is the UK branch of the global campaign to ensure men take more responsibility for reducing the level of violence against women. It is an educational organization to encourage reflection and discussion that leads to personal and collective action amongst men.Throughout the year, the White Ribbon Campaign encourages men to do educational work in schools, workplaces, and communities, to support local women's groups, and to raise money for organisations that oppose the incidence of Domestic Violence.
White Ribbon Campaign Director, Chris Green, has emphasized the importance of the role that parliamentarians can play in addressing the issue of domestic violence, stating that: "Parliamentarians enter parliament in order to make their community a better place. There is no more important way to do this than by working to eliminate violence against women.”
Michael said:“It is terrible that even after all the years of campaigning more than two women a week on average in the UK are killed by a violent partner or ex-partner. This constitutes nearly 40% of all female homicide victims. It is estimated that domestic violence costs victims, services and the state a total of around £23 billion a year. We have to get violent males to face up to their unacceptable behaviour if we are to eliminate this sad situation from our society".
