Michael Connarty
Labour Member of UK Parliament - Linlithgow and East Falkirk Constituency
Local MP, Michael Connarty commended the work of the Parliamentary Group on People Trafficking by sponsoring a Bill to create a Slavery Day tabled by the group’s chairman Anthony Steen MP.
The Bill is intended to raise awareness that there are as many people, particularly women and children, being trafficked into modern day slavery than were ever trafficked in the 19th century African Slave Trade.
Michael said “As we have come to learn over in Linlithgow and East Falkirk, women are trafficked across the world to be exploited. The Bill recognises sexual exploitation, child trafficking, forced labour and domestic servitude as modern day slavery. As we now know in Haiti, this has been a regular occurrence. If such a Slavery Day was established it would remind people and governments to campaign to stop slavery in all its forms.
