Michael Connarty
Labour Member of UK Parliament - Linlithgow and East Falkirk Constituency
The past weeks have been ones in which Mugabe
has done everything in his power to stifle the democratic will of the
Zimbabwean people. The first round of balloting saw deliberate attempts
by government personnel to intimidate voters. Having been defeated at
the polls, opposition party supporters were then beaten and killed
under state directed violence and leading members of the Movement for
Democratic Change were arrested. Having forced his main rival, Morgan
Tsvangarai, to withdraw from the second ballot through his use of
overwhelming violence, Mugabe was then returned to power, virtually
unopposed. Michael said, “The actions of Mugabe cannot be tolerated in
modern society. The people of Zimbabwe must be protected. The World
must unite to bring about a peaceful transition to a democratic and
moderate government in Zimbabwe. Increased sanctions on the leaders of
the regime, seizure of their assets and an international investigation
of their actions would send a powerful message to those violating
democratic ideals”.
