Michael Connarty MP slams overcrowding and service interruptions to Edinburgh to Bathgate rail line

Michael Connarty MP for Linlithgow and East Falkirk has written to First ScotRail demanding a meeting to discuss the serious implications of overcrowing on the Bathgate to Edinburgh rail service and the termination of trains on the return journey at Livingston.

Michael said, “The current rail service between Bathgate and Edinburgh is shocking. Due to the small number of carriages on the train, particularly at peak travel times, passengers are packed in like cattle. This has serious safety implications.”

Michael highlighted a recent incident whereby the overcrowding and heat caused one pregnant lady to faint. More carriages are needed at the peak travel times.

Michael was also unhappy about the number of journeys terminated at Livingston, with commuters left to find their own way to the end of their journey at Bathgate.

Michael felt that this cannot be excused by the upgrade work being carried out on the new Bathgate to Airdrie line. As a vital commuter service for people from West Lothian travelling to and from work it is not operating as it should.

Michael added, “I have serious growing concerns at First ScotRail’s ability to run this service to the standard they claimed when they won the franchise.”
