As the MP for former mining communities Michael Connarty was deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of Garry Jenkins, Philip Hill, Charles Breslin and David Powel the four miners from the South Wales colliery of Gleision. The Linlithgow and East Falkirk MP was joined by neighbouring Livingston MP Graeme Morrice and Lothians MSP Neil Findlay in expressing his condolences to the families, friends and comrades of the miners and in paying tribute to the efforts of all the emeregency services involved in the attempted mine rescue .
"Representing former mining communities mean the human costs of mining coal are never far from my mind. Polkemmet Colliery in West Lothian took its' toll of lives and 40 miners died in a flood at Redding Colliery in East Falkirk. As an honorary Free Collier I march each year to commemorate that disaster and I urge local people to give to the Gleision Miners' Appeal ".
