Michael Connarty
Labour Member of UK Parliament - Linlithgow and East Falkirk Constituency
Linlithgow and East Falkirk MP Michael Connarty is campaigning to persuade Ofcom who regulate the UK communication industries to have parity of charges with the rest of the European Union on the practice of “porting” i.e. changing mobile phone provider from one company to another.
Michael has already supported the reductions in cost for phoning from EU countries to the UK, and supports the “Terminate the rate” campaign to reduce charges for phoning to other mobile company phones. The present complicated UK system requires consumers to make at least two calls in order to allow customers to change or ‘port’ from one provider to another. There is also a two day delay before their number is changed to the new supplier. This undoubtedly limits consumer’s choice and reduces open market competition.
Michael said “,Ofcom are presently involved in a consultation on mobile phone portability. I am strongly backing the option that would allow a recipient i.e. customer led process which could be fully completed within two hours not the two days it presently takes. If this option is implemented by Ofcom it would deliver real benefits to mobile phone users UK wide.”
