Michael is currently the Chair of the European Scrutiny Select Committee. The Committee assesses the legal and/or political importance of each EU document, decides which EU documents are debated, monitors the activities of UK Ministers in the Council, and keeps legal, procedural and institutional developments in the EU under review.

This summer Michael was elected as the Vice Chair of the APPG of the above group. To discuss issues connected with the operation of the pharmaceutical industry in the UK; to exchange information and views with the pharmaceutical companies; to debate pharmaceutical developments and their impact on patients and UK healthcare.

The All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) was set up by interested Members of Parliament in the UK to promote the use and enjoyment of jazz as a music form. The Group has over one hundred members from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and is jointly chaired by Michael Connarty, MP for Linlithgow and Falkirk East and Lord Tony Colwyn, himself a very fine trumpeter and band leader.
