Keep the Post Public - STUC rally

Michael Connarty MP, Secretary to the Postal Workers CWU Group of MPs warned of the danger of the ‘political suicide note’ that was contained in the Royal Mail Bill which had been tabled in The House of Commons on the 20th may 2009.

Speaking at a meeting held in the STUC building, Michael reported that there were over 150 Labour MPs who had signed a motion urging the government not to sell shares to the private sector as part of the plan to modernise the Royal Mail.

Michael said: “The CWU Leadership have made an offer to make substantial changes in the hope that they can carry forward the necessary modernisation of the Royal Mail.

I and many of my fellow Labour MPs want the Prime Minister to be a part of the solution and believe there is a genuine chance for positive change, without breaking with the full public ownership of Royal Mail. I am in constant touch with the CWU leadership, and have been promised a meeting with the Prime Minister. I look forward to a positive outcome of that meeting.”
