As Chair of the European Scrutiny Committee Michael Connarty campaigned on the issue of mobile phone customers being charged very high rates when using their phones in EU Countries as a result of this campaign the telecommunications regulator ofcom have put the following measures in place.
1. When arriving outside the UK in another EU Country mobile phone companies must send a welcoming text message stating basic pricing on roaming charges a free phone number to contact on detailed charging infomation and a 112 emegency contact number.
2. Mobile phone companies must send a text message or e mail when appropriate to show when 80% of the agreed limit has been reached then another when the 100% limit is reached. They must then stop providing services and charging unless the customer authorises this.
3.Companies must apply a cut off when a customers bill reaches £40.00 per month - this will happen automatically unless the customer opts out.
