NO TO TRIDENT REPLACEMENT SAYS MICHAEL CONNARTY
Linlithgow and East Falkirk MP, Michael Connarty is one of a number of Westminster MPs who are giving a clear thumbs down message on nuclear weapons - right outside one of the entrances to the House of Commons!
Last week a huge colour poster was put up on a wall right opposite the entrance from the Westminster underground station. And Michael Connnarty, a member of the Parliamentary CND Group, was there to show his full support.
He said, “This is a great place to put up a poster. It sends a strong message to all who enter the House of Commons and huge number of the general public walk past it every day. The message is absolutely right. Nuclear weapons are immoral. We should not target civilian populations with weapons of mass destruction.
“At a time when public money has never been tighter and so many people are suffering from the government’s massive programme of cuts, it is sheer madness to spend billions on a new generation of Trident nuclear missiles and submarines. There would be no need to decimate police forces; deprive disabled people of the support they need; cut older people’s winter fuel allowance and hike petrol prices with a rise in VAT, if only the government would announce the immediate abandonment of the Trident replacement programme.
“I have always been opposed to nuclear weapons. Now there is an added reason for saying NO. I hope that all MPs take notice as they pass this poster on their way in to work.”
