Connarty Calls for Ofcom to lower Mobile Phone Termination rates

Linlithgow and East Falkirk MP Michael Connarty is calling for Ofcom to end the practice of high charges for termination rates for fixed and mobile phone users in 2009.

With an estimated 1 million mobile phones being given as Christmas presents this year – people will wake up on Boxing Day knowing that £3billion worth of charges are taken by the industry from consumers every year in the UK.

Michael Connarty said: “I am calling on Ofcom to take immediate action in 2009 to lower these outdated and unnecessary charges for people in Falkirk & West Lothian”

“The industry took notice when we pushed changes through the European Parliament to cut the costs of using your mobile phone in Europe which came into effect in Autumn this year. In 2009, as Chair of the European Scrutiny Select Committee in the UK Parliament – I will be pressing for the same action on text messaging costs when in Europe. In the same spirit, Ofcom should take the action now on termination rates”

Michael Connarty MP continues to support the campaign around Motion 229 in the UK for an end to ‘double charging'
