Port Of Grangemouth MP Michael Connarty pledges his support for threatened coastguard stations throughout Scotland.

MICHAEL CONNARTY SUPPORTS SCOTTISH COASTGUARD LOBBY AT WESTMINSTER

Michael Connarty yesterday joined Shadow Scottish Secretary, Ann McKechin and other Labour MPs to support the campaign to stop the closure of Scottish coastguard stations. Michael welcomed representatives of the Task Group on Scottish Coastguard Stations who made the journey to the House of Commons to demand a rethink from the Coalition Government and present a petition against closure of Scottish Coastguard Stations, signed by 28,000 people, a huge proportion of Scotland’s island populations.

Michael Connarty said, “As the MP representing Scotland’s largest container port of Grangemouth, I’m pleased that Scottish campaigners have made the long trip to Westminster to fight for our coastguard stations and they deserve our support. Coastguards perform an essential service and are crucial to safety at sea, especially around Scotland’s rugged coasts. The government’s proposals are reckless, senseless and are not supported by the Scottish people. They should be withdrawn immediately.”

Attached pictures show Michael Connarty with Angus Campbell, Leader of Western Isles Council and Chair of the Task Group on Coastguard Stations; and other group members Martin Collins and Lee Coutts as well as Michael with other Westminster MPs committed fighting these proposed closures.
